Come see my current show, Friends, Vices, and Fantasies!
It's up the whole month of October at:
event is from:
Tue-Sat 11-5 at
Blackfish Gallery
420 NW 9th Ave,
Portland,
Oregon.
I will have some images of the current work up on the website soon.
The show represents a little over two years of work, starting with The bar at My Father's Place
, and ending with, Halloween Party.
I became interested in tackling the problem of figure painting after a period of free form color studies from previous shows. The large painting The bar at My Father's Place,
utilized many photographic and drawing sources to complete the final composition. Halloween Party,
came directly from my imagination and memory. The rest of the work falls in between on a continuum, moving away from photographic sources towards drawings as a way to generate subjects.
There are many self portraits in this show. I appear in several of the larger group paintings as well. I'm not sure what it means that I included myself as a subject over and over, but I feel like this way of working has made the overall show feel intimate and personal. I suppose the maxim paint what you know
applies here.
Beyond myself, this show is about life in Portland. It is about my friends, artists or otherwise. It is about drinking, smoking, and partying. It is also about imaginary sea anemones. So, there you go.
